The Concept

Imagine mastering your mixes without causing the lifeless, squashed, and over compressed sound that has become so common in modern music. We have all been at the mercy of the "loudness wars" for over ten years now. Masters have become louder and louder, at the expense of the music becoming harsh and lacking punch and dynamics. One of the main causes of this epidemic is the use of the Peak Limiter to achieve increased levels in the mastering stage. Peak limiters attenuate transients and often reduce punch, stereo imaging, can greatly alter mix balances, and cause a fatiguing result to the ears.

Some of the top mastering engineers have found ways to combat this sonic degradation by using techniques other then Peak Limiting. One of the more popular techniques is the use of saturation in both the analog and digital domain. Another popular method is clipping the front end of expensive A/D converters.

However, both of these methods, while better then peak limiting, have their downfalls. Static saturation curves are not universal in their ability to sound good on all transients. Clipping greatly reduces low end punch and is very poor at retaining sub bass. Both static saturation and clipping have a small window of gain maximizing before audible distortion. Enter SLATE DIGITAL.

FG-X DYNAMICS RACK

Two years ago Steven Slate and expert algorithm engineer Fabrice Gabriel started working out the concept for a digital audio process that could increase the level of a mix without altering the punch and dynamic feel, or make the mix sound squashed and lifeless. They started by researching saturation curves and their effect on various types of transient material. After several months of study and hundreds of listening tests, they made some fascinating discoveries. What they found, was that in order to transparently add level to a mix, a dynamic and intelligent transient saturation system would have to be developed.

New ADVANCED ALGORITHMS were created to execute the extremely complex communication system that would be needed to properly perform the new dynamic operations. A new algorithm was formed, and the process was named "Intelligent Transient Preservation", or ITP.

The Glue is a high quality analog modeled plug-in based on The classic 80’s British big console buss compressor with some additional features. It uses the same high quality algorithms used in circuit simulation packages but optimised for real time use. It’s quick and easy to use and has an uncluttered interface.


Additions over the original circuit include an ultra-fast attack time of up to 0.01mS and a Range knob which backs off the compression to give incredibly natural sounding attacks and limits the maximum amount of compression applied. Also included are external sidechain support and an adjustable sidechain highpass filter.

Acoustic Drums


Three very different sounding acoustic drum loops have been processed with the same setting of The Glue, and are display first dry then limited with The Glue in three pairs below. The light grey waveforms are the dry audio and the yellow waveforms are the limited ones. As you can see the levels vary greatly on the dry waveforms and are very consistent on the yellow, peaking at around -6 dB.

Symphobia introduces a brand new concept and instrument group for ProjectSAM: a full-string ensemble recorded in a warm concert hall. An extensive Ensemble bank and unique Effects bank are available. The Ensemble bank includes numerous full-string articulations, including tremolo, staccato, pizzicato and con sordino. Other highlights in the collection feature beautiful chord performances, violin section-only articulations and low strings playing in octaves with the contrabasses playing one octave below the celli. The Effects bank includes a wide range of upward and downward glissandi, shrieky clusters, stabs and wild arco/pizzicato textures -- priceless material for film and TV composers, impossible to achieve using standard multi-samples.

Continuing SAM's orchestral brass tradition, the Brass Section in Symphobia offers an all-new full-brass ensemble in a number of articulations, including sustain, marcato, staccato and mutes. Also available are major & minor chord performances, different orchestrations of mixed brass instruments and, similar to the strings, low brass in octaves, with the tuba playing an octave below the trombones. All this is recorded live, without any post-production layering. The Effects range from several types of horrific clusters to note bendings, horn rips and wild repetitions. Some effects are performed by the entire brass ensemble, others by one section at a time.


One of Symphobia 's highlights are the articulations and effects performed by strings and brass together. Nothing beats the live, natural blending of sections in a real concert hall. Symphobia offers powerful sustains, staccatos and other articulations played by violins, violas, celli, contrabasses, horns, trumpets, trombones and tuba playing together, plus different orchestrated combinations of these instruments. Again, the low range has been sampled in octaves. Over 10 types of clusters are available, combining different playing techniques and dynamic arcs like arco, tremolo, flageolet for strings and open, muted and flatter-tongue for brass. Last but not least, the Effects bank houses the Glissandi Rips, played by the same powerful combination of sections.

In addition to the large symphonic sections, Symphobia also offers a solo string quintet, consisting of 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello and 1 contrabass. As with the other ensembles, the solo strings are spread out over one full keyboard. Articulations available: arco accented, arco espressivo, marcato, staccato and pizzicato.



Symphobia contains instruments that go beyond the traditional symphonic range. Over 120 beautifully performed ethnic flute phrases are included, covering duduk, shakuhachi and Native American flute. Some phrases are atonal or effect-like, others are performed in a specific key.

VX-64 Vocal Strip is a seven-stage processor designed for sculpting incredible sounding vocal tracks. Each of the VX-64's stages have been fine-tuned to be vocal-specific, taking the work out of loading an entire chain of vocal processors. The VX-64 features a new Cakewalk technology that employs phase-coherent, multi-band saturation to avoid unwanted distortion; unique filtering to avoid artifacts at extreme high and low frequencies; and an auto-leveling circuit that prevents the tube saturation from sounding too harsh when high gain transients are processed by it. VX-64 also employs a new de-essing algorithm designed with Cakewalk's LP-64 linear phase effect filtering technology to remove sibilance without creating any frequency smearing. 

The VX-64 includes 64 go-to presets and click & drag reordering of processing stage routing, making it fast and easy to get high quality vocals in seconds.
